Question

A light satellite moves in an elliptical orbit around Earth. Which statement is correct?

G1 Physics · Accepted Answer

Step 1: Earth’s gravitational force on the satellite is always radial: F = −(GMm/r²) in the radial direction. Step 2: Hence a = F/m is always toward Earth’s centre. Orbital speed changes, while angular momentum direction and total energy stay fixed in a planar Kepler orbit. Final answer: D — Its acceleration is always directed towards Earth’s centre.
