Above Earth, g(h) = g/[1 + h/R]², so g decreases with height. Inside Earth, for small depth d, g(d) = g(1 - d/R), so g also decreases with depth. Thus Statement I is correct. For equal numerical h and d, these expressions are not equal in general, so Statement II is incorrect.
